Joe's Vest

My pal, Lara, sent me 600gms of yarn recently to put towards my patchwork blanket but when they arrived they had Joe's name all over them...he has romantic notions about bohemian/artistic clothing and fancy vests etc so I came up with this pattern to use up Lara's yarn!

Joe’s Vest...Large Size(48inches)
6 x 100gm balls of wool /yarn 8ply/DK,
( the finished vest weighs 470gms so if you can work how to buy less then you are a better mathematician than I! )
6.5mm needles
5 buttons or toggles
The vest is knit using 3 strands of yarn together throughout to make a very chunky, warm vest.

Back

Cast on 74 stitches holding 3 strands of yarn together.
Rib 8 rows, either knit 1 purl 1 or knit2 purl2......you choose. Mine is 2sts.
Work 13-14 inches/35-36cms in Stocking Stitch
Cast off 7 stitches at beginning of next two rows, then decrease 1 st at each end of the following RS rows 5 times. 50sts remain.
Continue in SS until work measures 11inches/28cms from cast off at armhole.
Cast off.

Left Front

Cast on 41 sts
Row 1)rib to last 4 sts, knit4
Row2) K4, rib to end
Repeat rows 1 and 2 three times
Work in SS to match back at armhole cast off, remembering to knit the 4 sts at the front edge.
Cast off 7 sts at beginning of next row

Decrease 1 st at beginning of RS row 5 times and at the same time knit to last 6sts and K2 together, K4 until 18sts remain.

Work without further decreasing until it matches back shoulder and cast off.

Right Front
Work the left front now in reverse with the addition of a buttonhole(K2 tog, yfwd) every 10rows, up to where the decrease begin, 5 buttonholes in all.
To Make Up
Join shoulder seams and pick up 60sts around each armhole.
Work 2 rows of SS and cast off very loosely.
Join side seams and sew on buttons.
and at the same time knit to last 6sts and K2 together, K4 until 18sts remain.
Work without further decreasing until it matches back shoulder and cast off.

I think it would simple enough to adapt to smaller sizes.
